Gene Kranz,

leader of the “Tiger Team” of Flight Directors that brought the Apollo 13 spaceship safely back to Earth, and author of the best selling book, "Failure is Not an Option," will keynote Surge 2013!

Kranz, whose plan for bringing the crew of Apollo 13 back to Earth after its oxygen system failed, chronicled in the hit film "Apollo 13," will focus on the six foundations of flight control as a guideline for personal and professional excellence.

Scaling Infrastructures

Topics include configuration management, monitoring, hybrid cloud architectures, storage systems and other challenges seen at scale (e.g. time synchronization). While the scaling challenges can be significant in user-facing architectures, we also know that scaling infrastructure for rapidly growing development teams can be a challenge, too.

Scaling Architectures

Topics include distributed databases, load balancing and resource allocation, decoupled systems, fault-resilient systems and self-healing. Heterogeneous technology stacks are real, common and welcome. Many of today's architectures have more than two core database technologies and more than five languages in play on a day-to-day basis. This reality is due to both scaling challenges and the velocity of business. Come share the lessons you’ve learned in redesigning and live alteration of core architectural components.

Scaling Organizations

As sites today take off, teams grow. Fast and loose turns into dangerous without the right techniques, policies and people strategies. Topics include team structure, review techniques, code review processes and establishing cross-organization accountability. It takes a village to grow a big site, come share how you established (or regained) order in your village, keeping anarchy out and civility in.

The types of talks we like to get are those that recognize failure as a part of success. The most valuable sessions for attendees are those that honestly present a problem and walk the audience through a series of failures that ultimately result in finding the right path. A story of success rising from the ashes of failure; the bigger the fire, the more people learn. We want you to come and speak to a global audience on the challenges of scaling large Internet-facing architectures.
